Black Cat is the third episode of season four. Kingpin tests the super soldier serum on Felicia Hardy turning her into a super soldier. Felicia becomes a burglar called Black Cat. However, Black Cat betrays Kingpin and joins forces with Spider-Man to save her father and prevent Kingpin from creating an army of super soldiers. This episode is the first appearance of Felicia Hardy as Black Cat.

As Spider-Man web slings through New York City, he thinks to himself that he should have prevented Felicia Hardy from being kidnapped. Spider-Man also mentions that Anastasia Hardy is now missing too. Nearby a mysterious woman wearing a domino mask and a cat suit goes to a jewelry store and disables the security system and robs the place. As the cat burglar finishes robbing the jewelry store she sees Spider-Man web slinging nearby. The cat burglar purposely sets off the jewelry store's alarm and Spider-Man hears it and goes to investigate. Just as Spider-Man arrives at the jewelry store he is attacked by the burglar who introduces herself as Black Cat. After a very short fight Black Cat uses sleeping gas to knock Spider-Man out. Black Cat begins to remove Spider-Man's mask. However, Black Cat stops and says that it will be much more rewarding when he takes his mask off for her willingly and kisses him on the lips. As Black Cat leaps off the roof, Spider-Man wakes up and web slings away.

At that moment various S.H.I.E.L.D. agents get word that Spider-Man has been spotted nearby. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents communicate this to Nick Fury who informs them that he has discovered that John Hardesky has escaped and was replaced by Chameleon. Fury orders his agents to capture Spider-Man believing that he might be after the formula to the super soldier serum.

A short time later at Crime Central, Kingpin and John Hardesky wait for Black Cat to return. Kingpin tells Hardesky that if Black Cat has failed if will not be good for him. Hardesky assures Kigpin that he has trained Black Cat to be unbeatable. Just then Black Cat returns to Crime Central and gives Kingpin the diamonds she stole. Kingpin congratulates Herbert Landon for successfully recreating the super soldier serum. However, Landon boasts that he has improved upon Reinstein's original formula. This improved formula allows Black Cat to transform at will between her natural petite frame and her muscular body she got after taking the serum. Black Cat transforms back into her natural petite body and takes off her mask revealing herself to be Felicia Hardy. Felicia voices her disgust about having to commit crimes for Kingpin. However, Kingpin tells Felicia that as long as he holds her father hostage, she will continue to do as he says. Kingpin then asks if Felicia encountered Spider-Man because he is curious how her power measured up to his. Felicia lies and says that did didn't fight Spider-Man. Kingpin has Felicia and John taken to a holding cell. When they get into their cell, Hardesky tells Felicia that he wanted her to have a better life than the one he had. However, Felicia tells her father not to blame himself because there was no way he could have stopped Kingpin from giving her the super soldier serum. Hardesky asks Felicia if there is anyone special in her life and Felicia answers that here is someone. Kingpin is secretly watching them on a security monitor and says to himself that since he now has the serum, he will have John and Felicia killed.

Meanwhile, at the Daily Bugle, Peter Parker tells Joseph Robertson that he witnessed Spider-Man fight a criminal called the Black Cat. Peter was hoping that the Daily Bugle had a file on her but they didn't. J. Jonah Jameson then asks Peter to come into his office. Jameson tells Peter that Anastasia Hardy is staying at his penthouse apartment and that she is scared to go home, but she won't tell him why. Jameson then asks if Felicia is in some kind of trouble. However, Peter answers that he doesn't know anything. Jameson gets angry and yells at Peter to get out of his office. As Peter walks out he is very surprised to hear that Jameson cares about someone other than himself.

Later that night Peter, as Spider-Man, goes to Jameson's apartment to talk to Anastasia. Anastasia gets angry and tells Spider-Man that he has no right to be there. However, Spider-Man barks back at Anastasia and says that if Felicia is in danger someone has to do something. Spider-Man hands Anastasia a Spider-Tracer and tells her that when she is ready to talk to can press the button on the Spider-Tracer to contact him. Spider-Man then leaves. Anastasia then calls the Daily Bugle and tells Glory Grant to let Jameson know that she is returning home.

Back at Crime Central, Hardesky helps Felicia escape. However, Hardesky is unable to go with her. As Felicia escapes, she promises that she will return to rescue her father. When Felicia returns home she is greeted by her mother who had been worried about her. Felicia tells Anastasia that she has seen her father, to her mother's surprise. Felicia also tells Anastasia that she wants to save her father but she needs help. Anastasia hands Felicia the Spider-Tracer that Spider-Man gave her earlier.

As Black Cat, Felicia goes to a biker bar and uses the Spider-Tracer to contact Spider-Man. When Spider-Man arrives at the location of the Spider-Tracer, he is surprised to see Black Cat. Spider-Man attacks Black Cat, and after a brief fight Black Cat tells Spider-Man that she is on his side and that she needs his help to save John Hardesky. When Spider-Man asks Black Cat what her connection to John Hardesky is, she answers that John Hardesky turned her into a super soldier. Spider-Man and Black Cat continue to fight but are approached by a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents led by Agent X. Spider-Man and Black Cat lead Agent X and the S.HI.E.L.D. agents on a chase through New York City. Spider-Man is out of webbing so he gets of the back of a motorcycle driven by Black Cat and they speed off with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents following after them. During the chase Spider-Man reloads his We-Shooters. Spider-Man and Black Cat are able to subdue all the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Spider-Man tells Black Cat that he isn't sure if he can trust her. Black Cat replies that he'll have to trust her if they are going to save John Hardesky.

A short time later back at Crime Central, Hardesky, who is wearing his full body cat suit, is caught trying to escape. However, Kingpin deduces that Hardesky deliberately set off the alarm as a distraction so Felicia could escape. Kingpin has Hardesky taken back to his cell where Black Cat is waiting. Kingpin says that he no longer has any use for either of them and orders his men to kill them. Kingpin then orders Landon to go to his laboratory and produce enough of the formula to create an army of super soldiers.

Minutes later in Landon's laboratory, he is working on creating more super soldier serum. However, when Landon looks behind him he sees that Hardesky is typing on his computer. Landon is surprised to see Hardesky because he was just taken away by the guards. Hardesky then erases the super soldier formula from all of Landon's computers permanently.

Meanwhile, Black Cat and the Hardesky imposter are boarded onto Kingpin's stealth ship and flown away from Crime Central. However, the person in the cat suit is really Spider-Man and together he and Black Cat fight Kingpin's men. However, Doctor Octopus enters the room and grabs Black Cat with is mechanical arms. Not wanting to endanger Black Cat, Spider-Man surrenders. Kingpin appears on a monitor and says that Spider-Man and Black Cat must be killed and John Hardesky must be found. However, Spider-Man and Black Cat are saved when Agent X and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents find and attack the stealth ship. Landon comes running into Kingpin's office and informs him that Hardesky was left behind and erased the super soldier formula from his computer. Kingpin is so angry that the shouts and smashes a phone on his desk to pieces. As Spider-Man and Black Cat try to leave the stealth ship, Doctor Octopus grabs Black Cat. However, one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. jets fires a missile at the stealth ship which causes Doctor Octopus and Black Cat to fall out. Spider-Man catches Black Cat with a webline and Doctor Octopus opens a parachute as he begins to fall. Spider-Man and Black Cat make their way to the cockpit and see that the stealth ship is running out of gas. Black Cat aims the stealth ship at the river and Spider-Man and Black Cat jump out of the ship before it sinks into the water. Spider-Man says that it was a good thing that he put a Spider-Tracer on Black Cat before she ran off. However, when Spider-Man looks at his GPS, he sees that Black Cat put the Spider-Tracer back onto him.

Later, John says goodbye to Felicia and Anastasia. John says that he doesn't want to leave them but he has no other choice. Felicia tries to convince her father to stay but John says that she would never be able to lead a normal life with him around. Spider-Man then takes Hardesky to a rooftop so he could be picked up by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Spider-Man asks if he really wants to be put back into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. Hardesky answers that he doesn't want to but he has to and explains that the super soldier formula could cause chaos on Earth if it ever fell into the wrong hands. Spider-Man then hands Hardesky, J. Jonah Jameson's communications badge and he activates it alerting S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to his location. Agent X and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents arrive and take Hardesky back into custody. Nick Fury tells Agent X to thank Spider-Man if she sees him because he has a feeling Spider-Man was responsible to Hardesky's re-capture.

As Spider-Man web slings away he thinks remembers that before all this happened he wanted to turn to Felicia with his grief but now she has more than enough problems of her own to deal with. Spider-Man wonders if he is alone again or if he has found a kindred spirit in the Black Cat.

  • This episode is a direct continuation of The Cat picking up several days after the end of that episode.

  • This episode is loosely based on The Amazing Spider-Man #149 (1979) and Spectacular Spider-Man #89-90 (1984).
  • The Amazing Spider-Man #149 was the first appearance of Black Cat.
  • In Spectacular Spider-Man #89-90, Kingpin gives Black Cat the power to cause other people to have bad luck when they are around her. This was changed to the super soldier serum in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
  • When Spider-Man first meets Black Cat, he says "you know what they say about curiosity." This is a reference to the saying "curiosity killed the cat". Curiosity killed the cat is a proverb used to warn of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation. The earliest printed reference to the original proverb is attributed to the British playwright Ben Johnson in his 1598 play, Every Man in His Humour, which was performed first by William Shakespeare. The original saying was "Helter skelter, hang sorrow, care will kill a cat, up-tails all, and a pox on the hangman."
  • This is one of the few episodes where the word kill is used. Because of the network censors words like kill, death or die were not allowed to be said on Spider-Man: The Animated Series. When Spider-Man is talking to Black Cat, he says "If you work for Kingpin why don't you want to kill me?"
  • During the episode, Black Cat says "Ever hear the phrase, divide and conquer?". This saying means to make a group of people disagree and fight with one another so that they will not join together against one. This saying is attributed to Philip II who was the king of Macedon from 259 B.C. until his assassination in 336 B.C. He was the father of Alexander the Great.
  • Spider-Man tells Black Cat that he doesn't team-up with anyone. This obviously isn't true since at this point in the series, Spider-Man has already worked with the X-Men, Blade, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Rocket Racer, Spot, Venom, War Machine and Wong. However, Spider-Man could just be saying this because he doesn't trust Black Cat yet.

  • John Semper Jr. was a big fan of John Phillip Law. When John Phillip Law came into the studio to record his lines, John Semper asked him to sign his laserdisc copy of Danger: Diabolik which was Semper's favorite John Phillip Law movie. On the laserdisc, John Phillip Law wrote "To John Semper, the man I modeled my character on, best personal regards, John Phillip Law."
  • John Semper Jr. revealed on his Facebook page that John Phillip Law thanked John Semper for casting him in Spider-Man: The Animated Series by taking him to a sushi dinner with his girlfriend, Susan "Suzy" Miller, who was the ex-wife of actor, Richard Burton. John Phillip Law told Semper stories of his career and about filming movies in America and Europe, and working with director, Mario Bava, who was one of Semper's favorite directors.

Episode review

A review by Amazing Spidey from Marvel Animation Age

This episode was one of those rare occurrences in a cartoon where everything simply fell neatly into place. All of the plot points were resolved by the end of the episode, and we got a great introduction to Black Cat, who would become one of the major characters in the remaining episodes of the season. This episode easily stands out as her greatest appearance.

Once again, Doc Ock is nothing more than a lackey, but Kingpin played a more pivotal role, and the plot revolving around his appearance is an interesting one. After testing that the super soldier formula works, he planned to create an army of them to do his bidding. There was times in this series when Kingpin had ideas which were actually really, really stupid. The time he wanted the army of mutants to do his bidding, when any supervillain in the world was ready to work for him stood out the most.

The real story, however, as the title suggests, is Black Cat. Her first scene was great, as was her fight with Spider-Man. The follow up, in which she uses the spider tracer Spider-Man gave his mother, was another nice little scene. She was a little arrogant, but Black Cat always has been. What I found most interesting about the Spider-Man/Black Cat relationship was that they didn't know who was under their masks. I've often wanted to see what would happen when they found out that they used to date before Peter was married, and how cruel Felicia often was to Peter. The relationship between them would've been much more interesting if it had ended because of their masks. Whilst I did find their relationship entertaining, I found the ending to be as welcome as a fart in an elevator (thank you Mark Millar!)

The animation was especially pretty to the eye, and The Cat's plan for stealing the super soldier formula from Kingpin was great. It was a wonderful surprise for the viewers. Overall, these 2 episodes were quite easily the best Black Cat episodes from the show. Which unfortunately, wasn't too difficult.

Spider-Man: "Some superhero I turned out to be. First I was helpless to save Mary Jane and now I might never see Felicia again. She and her mother have been missing for days. Where could they be? I feel like I'm losing everyone in my life one by one."

(Spider-Man hears an alarm.)
Spider-Man: "Well, that's not exactly what I had in mind for tonight, but I guess I should respond."

Black Cat: "I knew knew you would come, Spider."
Spider-Man: "Who are you?!"
Black Cat: "Just a stray Black Cat."
Spider-Man: "You're definitely getting enough vitamins!
(Spider-Man throws Black Cat but she does a flip in the air and lands on her feet.)
Black Cat: "Silly Spider, cats always land on their feet."
(Spider-Man captures Black Cat in webbing.)
Black Cat: "Hey, I was just being curious. I wanted to see if I was as strong as you."
Spider-Man: "Well, you know what they say about curiosity."
Black Cat: "Indeed. I also know the value of surprise!"
(Black Cat uses sleeping gas on Spider-Man which knocks him out.)
Black Cat: "Sorry, Spider. I want to know just who's behind your mask."
(Black Cat begins to remove Spider-Man's mask but stops herself.)
Black Cat: "No, this isn't what I want after all. It'll be far more rewarding when you take the mask off for me willingly."
(Black Cat jumps off the roof and Spider-Man wakes up.)
Spider-Man: "Whoever that woman was she gives new meaning to the word 'knockout'."

Nick Fury: "We've verified that the person in Hardesky's cell is really the Chameleon. Hardesky's gone! I want to know Spider-Man's connection. Is he trying to get the Super Soldier formula? I'll have all your heads if it falls into the wrong hands!"

Kingpin: "Nervous, Hardesky? You should be. If our little test subject has flown the coop, it will be very unfortunate for you."
John Hardesky: "Don't worry, Kingpin. I've trained the Black Cat to be unbeatable. She should be returning now."

Kingpin: "Congratulations, Landon. It appears you have successfully recreated the super soldier serum."
Herbert Landon: "Recreated it?! I have improved the formula."

Kingpin: "Ah, brilliant! A built-in ability to hide one's super identity."
Felicia Hardy: "And hide the shame I feel to be carrying out your wicked crimes."
Kingpin: "As long as I keep your father hostage, you, my dear Black Cat, will continue to do what I tell you. Did you perchance encounter that wall-crawling menace, Spider-Man?"
Felicia Hardy: "No, I didn't."
Kingpin: "Pity. I should like to have known how your powers would've measured against his."

Felicia Hardy: "Between your coaching and the formula, Black Cat's quite the feline felon."
John Hardesky: "Oh, I wanted something better for you, better than the life I had."
Felicia Hardy: "Daddy, this isn't your fault. There was no way you could've stopped the Kingpin from giving me that serum."
John Hardesky: "Maybe, what what about all the times you needed me when you were growing up, and I wasn't there? Will you ever forgive me for that?"
Felicia Hardy: "That's all in the past."
John Hardesky: "Tell me, now that you're all grown up, is there anyone special in your life?"
Felicia Hardy: "Actually, there is someone. He's a lot like you, mysterious."
John Hardesky: "And you have strong feelings for him?"
Felicia Hardy: "Yes, I'm afraid so."

Kingpin: "Ah, family reunions are so touching. I shall miss this little family after I have destroyed them."

Peter Parker: "Uh, what's up, Mr. Jameson?"
J. Jonah Jameson: "You're friends with Felicia Hardy. Is she in some kind of trouble?"
Peter Parker: "I'm not sure. Why do you ask?"
J. Jonah Jameson: "Not that it's any of your business, Parker, but Anastasia Hardy is a guest at my penthouse."
Peter Parker: "Mrs. Hardy is staying with you?"
J. Jonah Jameson: "She's afraid to go home, but she won't tell me what's wrong. I tried all my other sources, and now I'm reduced to asking you."
Peter Parker: "I don't know any more than you do."
J. Jonah Jameson: "Well, that's just dandy! What are you wasting my time for?! Go back to your rooftops and sewers!"
Peter Parker: "Right. I can't believe it. Jameson actually seems to care about someone. At least that solves the mystery of where Mrs. Hardy is."

John Hardesky: "Even at my best, Kitten, I never had what it'll take to escape from this fortress."
Black Cat: "I'm not sure I do, either."
John Hardesky: "You do. Trust me."
Black Cat: "John Hardesky, I will come back for you."

Felicia Hardy: "Mother?"
Anastasia Hardy: "Felicia, my darling! Where have you been? Are you alright?"
Felicia Hardy: "Yes, and I've seen Daddy."
Anastasia Hardy: "You've seen your father?"
Felicia Hardy: "He told me everything. I want to save him, but I need help."
Anastasia Hardy: "I suppose someone has already volunteered."
(Anastasia hands Felicia a Spider-Tracer that Spider-Man gave her.)
Felicia Hardy: "I knew he wouldn't let me down. Don't worry. We'll take care of everything."

Black Cat: "Hey, Spider, care to dance?"
Spider-Man: "Not this time."
Spider-Man: "What have you got to do with the Hardys?"
Black Cat: "Cool it, Spider. I'm on your side. I need your help to save another cat, John Hardesky."
Spider-Man: "What's your connection to him?"
Black Cat: "He made me the super soldier I am today."
Spider-Man: "The formula, you've actually taken it?"
Black Cat: "Oh, smart Spider."
Spider-Man: "I'm smart enough not to trust you. I don't even know who you are!"
Black Cat: "I'm supposed to be your executioner if Kingpin has his way."
Spider-Man: "Kingpin? If you work for Kingpin, why don't you want to kill me?"
Black Cat: "Who knows? Maybe it's your animal magnetism."

(Spider-Man's foot gets caught in an adhesive fired from a S.H.I.E.L.D. agents weapon.)
Black Cat: "You really put your foot in it this time, Spider."

Spider-Man: "This'll keep 'em in there!"
(Spider-Man tries to use his webbing to keep a door sealed so S.H.I.E.L.D. agents can't follow him, but he is out of webbing.)
Spider-Man: "Or maybe not!"

(Black Cat and Spider-Man steal a motorcycle to get away from the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that are following them.)
Biker: "You miserable thieves!"
Spider-Man: "We're not thieves! Well, I'm not so sure about her."

Spider-Man: "I hate to be a backseat driver, but this is a one-way street."
Black Cat: "Relax, I'm a New Yorker."
Spider-Man: "'Relax' doesn't go in the same sentence as 'New York'!"
(Black Cat drives the motorcycle straight toward an oncoming bus.)
Spider-Man: Oh, big, big bus!"
(Black Cat drives the motorcycle up a ramp and jumps over the bus.)
Spider-Man: "You didn't take lessons from a guy named Blade, did you?"

Black Cat: "Ever hear the phrase, divide and conquer?"

(Black Cat jumps onto one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents hover crafts and takes out the key.)
Black Cat: "Thanks for the ride!"

Spider-Man: "All right, now where were we before I was so rudely interrupted?"
Black Cat: "I was about to tell you what a good team we'll make."
Spider-Man: "I don't team with anyone."
Black Cat: "You'll have to if we're going to save John Hardesky."
Spider-Man: "Look, I don't even know who you are."
Black Cat: "Like you, I have my secrets, but that doesn't mean you can't trust me."
Spider-Man: "All right, but we have to return this bike first."
Black Cat: "No problem."
Spider-Man: "And then let's discuss this bad habit you have of taking things that aren't yours."

(Kingpin captures John Hardesky who is trying to escape Crime Central.)
Kingpin: "It would appear The Cat has lost his touch. Or was this alarm deliberately tripped as a diversion? That would be just like you, using surprise to help your protégé escape. The Kingpin does not like surprises. You had better hope that your kitten is still with us."

Kingpin: "Guards! Dispose of these two alley cats."

Kingpin: "Landon, go to your laboratory and manufacture enough serum to make an army super soldiers."

Herbert Landon: "You, but you were just taken away!"
John Hardesky: When the Cat is involved, one should never believe everything they see. Take this formula, for instance. Now you see it..."
Herbert Landon: "The formula! You're erasing it!"
John Hardesky: "Exactly."
(Hardesky points to his head.)
John Hardesky: "This is the only kind of memory I ever trusted."
Herbert Landon: "You can't!"
John Hardesky: "I guess the old Cat hasn't lost his touch after all."
(Hardesky erases the super soldier formula from Landon's computers.)
Herbert Landon: "No!"

Doctor Octopus: "Surrender, Spider-Man, unless you want to see if this little Cat truly has nine lives."
Spider-Man: "No! I can't risk Black Cat's life."

Kingpin: "Ah, how predictable. Once again, Spider-Man falls prey to his pitiful weakness: compassion. We must find the real Hardesky at once. And, oh, yes, the prisoners must be destroyed."

Herbert Landon: "Kingpin, I've bad news! Hardesky was left behind hidden in my laboratory! He has destroyed the formula!"
Kingpin: "What?! No!"

(Lasers are being fired everywhere so Spider-Man and Black Cat duck behind some metal crates for cover.)
Spider-Man: "If we stay here, we may take a hit from either side, or both! Personally, I like a little more control over my destiny."
Black Cat: "I'm with you, Spider. Lead on!"

(Spider-Man stops Black Cat from falling out of the stealth ship by attaching a web line to her.)
Black Cat: "Nice web shot, Spider."

Doctor Octopus: "We shall meet again, Spider-Man! Black Cat, this I promise you."

Spider-Man: "We all know how cats feel about water, but I think I can keep your paws dry."
Black Cat: "Very impressive."
Spider-Man: "I'm getting pretty good at this. Hope old John Hardesky took care of business and got away safely."
Black Cat: "If there's one man I'm sure I can count on, it's John Hardesky. Great working with you, Spider. Don't be surprised if I cross your path again."
(Black Cat pushes Spider-Man into the river.)
Spider-Man: "Huh? What? Hey! What is it with me? Why do women always leave me high and wet? Well, at least when she wasn't looking, I put a Spider-Tracer on her."
(Spider-Man sees that Black Cat put the Spider-Tracer back on him.)
Spider-Man: Huh? She put it back on me!"

Anastasia Hardy: "At least this time we get to say goodbye."
John Hardesky: "I hate to leave, but there is no other way."
Anastasia Hardy: "Twenty years ago we never had that chance."
John Hardesky: "I am sorry for that, Anastasia."
Felicia Hardy: "I can't let you leave me again. I love you too much, Daddy."
John Hardesky: "I love you too, Kitten. That's why I must go. You can never lead a normal life with me in it. I know too much."
Anastasia Hardy: "Oh, John, there's no place where you'll be safe. What kind of a life is that?"
John Hardesky: "But you're forgetting, The Cat has many lives. Perhaps one of them will be right for me."
(Spider-Man leaves with John Hardesky.)
Felicia Hardy: "He's gone from our lives once more."
Anastasia Hardy: "Yes, but thank heaven he's alive and free."

Spider-Man: "Are you sure you want to do this?"
John Hardesky: "I don't want to, but I have to. You see, I've got a secret in here that could destroy the world. And there's only one place where I'll be able to keep it safe."
Spider-Man: "Then here goes."
John Hardesky: "Don't ever tell Felicia where I am."
Spider-Man: "I won't."
John Hardesky: "And don't worry about me. Now get out of here. And thanks."

Agent X: "Commander Fury, it's Hardesky! It looks like he's waiting for us!"
Nick Fury: "Well, what do you know? Bring him in, and if you see Spider-Man around, tell him I said thanks. Something tells me he had his web-covered hand in this."

Spider-Man: "Before all this started, I'd hope to turn to Felicia with my grief, but she has more than enough problems of her own to deal with. It looks like I'm alone again. Or am I? Have I found a kindred spirit in the Black Cat? I just wish I knew who she was."
